Hi, I’m Louis Were, a software developer and filmmaker from Kenya and Uganda. I’m building VideoPro.africa, a platform that connects African creatives—like filmmakers and photographers—with clients who want to film here. I ran a successful production company in Kenya and saw a big problem: clients struggle to film in Africa because it’s hard to find reliable people and info. At the same time, talented African creatives can’t easily reach these clients.

A UNESCO report says Africa’s film industry already employs 5 million people and adds $5 billion to the economy. But it could do so much more—20 million jobs and $20 billion—if we support it right. That’s why I created VideoPro.africa. It’s a one-stop place where clients get up-to-date filming guides, verified producers, and tools to rent gear, manage projects, and pay securely. We’re making filming in Africa simple and trustworthy.

The Challenge

I started with a basic version of the platform to test it out. But finding legit contacts was tough. So, I traveled to six countries—Kenya, Ghana, Togo, South Africa, Uganda, and Burkina Faso—to meet and verify producers myself. It worked! We now have a directory of trusted pros. But requests keep coming from places like Senegal, Congo, and Nigeria—countries we don’t cover yet. Clients want to film in major cities across Africa, and while we help with some, we’re missing others. They’re ready to pay, but we need more verified producers to meet the demand. Finding the best ones takes time—they need proper documents and registrations, and only a few qualify. That’s why verification is everything.
