Zambia provides abundant opportunities for filmmakers in search of the ideal filming location, creating an ideal cinematic backdrop for a variety of productions. The Zambia Film and Television Authority (ZaFTA) is dedicated to elevating the film industry, aiming to establish it as a significant source of employment and a key driver of the country's economic development.
How To Successfully Film in Zambia
1. Obtain Filming Permit
To secure a Filming Permit in Zambia, submit a letter requesting the permit and fill out an application form. Include the following documents:
a) Synopsis and screenplay for short films, TV series, and full-length feature films.
b) Synopsis, screenplay, treatment, script outline, running order, or storyboard for documentaries, TVCs/advertisements, music videos, corporate videos, infomercials, travelogues, docudramas, testimonials, features, etc.
Filming permits for TV series and full-length feature films are processed within 48 hours upon receipt of a complete application, while permits for short productions are processed within 10-25 minutes.
2. Settle Import Duty
A nominal and non-refundable import charge is levied on imported film equipment per consignment, payable to the Zambia Revenue Authority.
3. Fulfill Immigration Requirements
International filmmakers intending to undertake filming activities in Zambia are required to obtain Special Passes from the Department of Immigration Services.
4. Engage Local Film Agent
All expatriate filmmakers MUST be facilitated by a Local Film Agent. In this regard, a Directory of Accredited Local Film Agents, who will facilitate location scouting, transport, hotel reservation, film licenses, shipping, etc. can be obtained from the Film Licensing Officer on request or download here.
5. National Parks Filming (If Needed)
